What are the 15 warning signs of impending tyranny? As tyrants take control of democracies, they typically:

1. Exaggerate their mandate to govern -- claiming, for example, that they won an election by a landslide even after losing the popular vote.

2. Repeatedly claim massive voter fraud in the absence of any evidence, in order to restrict voting in subsequent elections.

3. Publicly criticize anyone who criticizes them, labeling them “enemies.”

4. Turn the public against journalists or media outlets that criticize them, calling them “deceitful” and “scum.”

The core contributors: predatory leaders whose true natures and motivations are unknown to most people, especially in the early stages of their operations. In the hypothesis of predatory leadership, a majority of these antagonists display symptoms of narcissism and psychopathy, notably the following:

1. A narcissistic sense of entitlement;
2. Lack of capacity for empathy;
3. Lack of capacity for conscience (the ability to take responsibility for the consequences of their actions);
4. In their mind, they are the only victims in their view of the world

Hosts who rent rooms through sites like Airbnb.com stand on one side pointing to mostly positive experiences with guests. They also say the extra income helps them keep their homes, and their neighbors seldom, if ever, complain about their visitors.

Old Town District

The 52-acre Old Towne district, which includes the Union Street shops and restaurants, River’s Edge, Midtown, and Riverine Apartments, is home to more than 80 businesses employing more than 1,000 people. Thirty years ago, only a handful of people lived in the district. Now, more than 460 folks call it home, and more residential projects are planned. Old Town is important environmentally, too.

Unless you work for an organization like the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks the activity of hate groups, or are a scholar of critical race studies, “white supremacy” and “white nationalism” aren’t likely part of your daily vocabulary. Or at least they weren’t until Trump’s bold expressions of racism and xenophobia — and hints that he’d support policies that reflect these concepts — began to inspire groups that embrace these ideas, making them newly relevant.

TRAVERSE CITY — The Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities will launch its New Economy Project on Monday when it releases the first of four online videos.

The project aims to get people talking about Traverse City's strengths and weaknesses as a workplace for millennials. The nonprofit Groundwork Center hopes the series will build awareness among millennials of the area's attractions — and simultaneously build awareness in the local population about issues that millennials think about when considering a move here.

What is a Sanctuary City?

A sanctuary city is a city in the United States or Canada that has adopted a policy of protecting undocumented immigrants by not prosecuting them solely for violating federal immigration laws in the country in which they are now living illegally.
