TRAVERSE CITY — Praise, scorn and probing questions abound in the city over tourist homes and how they're regulated.
Hosts who rent rooms through sites like Airbnb.com stand on one side pointing to mostly positive experiences with guests. They also say the extra income helps them keep their homes, and their neighbors seldom, if ever, complain about their visitors.
The 52-acre Old Towne district, which includes the Union Street shops and restaurants, River’s Edge, Midtown, and Riverine Apartments, is home to more than 80 businesses employing more than 1,000 people. Thirty years ago, only a handful of people lived in the district. Now, more than 460 folks call it home, and more residential projects are planned. Old Town is important environmentally, too.
Unless you work for an organization like the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks the activity of hate groups, or are a scholar of critical race studies, “white supremacy” and “white nationalism” aren’t likely part of your daily vocabulary. Or at least they weren’t until Trump’s bold expressions of racism and xenophobia — and hints that he’d support policies that reflect these concepts — began to inspire groups that embrace these ideas, making them newly relevant.

TRAVERSE CITY — The Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities will launch its New Economy Project on Monday when it releases the first of four online videos.
The project aims to get people talking about Traverse City's strengths and weaknesses as a workplace for millennials. The nonprofit Groundwork Center hopes the series will build awareness among millennials of the area's attractions — and simultaneously build awareness in the local population about issues that millennials think about when considering a move here.
What is a Sanctuary City?
A sanctuary city is a city in the United States or Canada that has adopted a policy of protecting undocumented immigrants by not prosecuting them solely for violating federal immigration laws in the country in which they are now living illegally.

Any effort to protect vulnerable Americans from the most harmful effects of the new administration’s policies will have to come from cities and states. All resistance is local. The beginning of a new reconstruction will have to be local, too.
Michigan had the highest number of hate incidents among states in the Midwest in the 10 days following the Nov. 8 election, according to a new report released this week.
There were at least 40 incidents involving bias against African Americans, Latinos, immigrants, Jews, Muslims, LGBT, and others in Michigan in the period following the contentious election, 18 of them involving suspects who mentioned Donald Trump, according to a report by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

As a father, I tell my children that the president-elect is not a role model. In fact, they should do and say exactly the opposite. In our house, we do not scapegoat other people, we do not mock people or marginalize them because they are different. In our house, we strive to be kind to one another.
